About Us

Persatuan Pembangunan Matematik Malaysia (PPMM), also known as the Malaysian Mathematical Advancement Association (MMAA), is a non-profit organisation committed to strengthening mathematical education and problem-solving culture in Malaysia. Our work centres around three key areas: supporting meaningful mathematical enrichment for students and teachers, organising national-level competitions, and representing Malaysia's problem-solving community on the international stage.

At its core, PPMM aims to bridge the gap between what is typically taught in schools and the kind of thinking required in higher-level problem solving. We believe that with the right exposure and guidance, more students can develop the confidence and ability to engage with mathematics at a deeper level — and even compete globally.

Although formally registered in 2021 under the Societies Act 1966, PPMM builds on decades of groundwork. Members of its leadership and committee have been actively involved in Malaysia's participation in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) since 1999. This combination of experience and formal structure allows us to work effectively with government agencies, academic institutions, and partners who share our vision.

The daily operational affairs of our association are maintained by the Secretariat, led by Haziman Sairin and Abdul Syukor Hazram. This dedicated team manages the complex logistics of national competitions, maintains communications with thousands of schools across Malaysia, and coordinates with international host countries for various Olympiads. Their work ensures that the MMAA operates with a high degree of transparency and efficiency, making us a reliable partner for large-scale educational initiatives.

Educational Impact Focus

Our ecosystem is designed to identify potential early, strengthen mathematical confidence, and guide high-achieving students toward world-class problem solving.

Outreach to Excellence

From open competitions to selective camps, we create a clear progression for students from all backgrounds.

Educator Empowerment

Teacher programs equip schools with practical methods to discover and mentor mathematically gifted learners.

Global Benchmarking

International contests and collaborations ensure Malaysian students and coaches meet global standards.

Our Activities

PPMM runs a complete talent development journey from broad outreach to elite international representation.

IMONST Logo

The Malaysian IMO Program

The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is widely regarded as the "World Cup" of mathematics for high school students, featuring the most challenging problems in Algebra, Combinatorics, Geometry, and Number Theory. The MMAA, through the Malaysia IMO Committee, is the sole body appointed by the Ministry of Education (MOE) to manage the outreach, selection, and training for the national team. Since our involvement, Malaysia has achieved historic milestones, including the 2024 record where every member of the national team secured a medal at the 65th IMO in the United Kingdom.

IMO National Selection Test (IMONST)

The IMONST is our primary vehicle for talent discovery, reaching over 3,000 students annually across Malaysia. It is structured into two critical phases: IMONST 1, an open online screening that focuses on logical reasoning and basic problem-solving, and IMONST 2, a rigorous proctored exam for the top 10% of performers. This tiered system ensures that we identify not just those with high computational speed, but those with the deep, creative insight required for high-level mathematics.

IMO Training Program (Bengkel IMO / BIMO)

Students who excel in IMONST are invited to the BIMO series, an intensive multi-stage training program designed to refine their skills to international standards. These workshops are conducted by elite coaches and past IMO medalists who mentor students in advanced topics like functional equations, graph theory, and modular arithmetic. The program is highly competitive, narrowing down a pool of hundreds to the final six students who earn the honor of representing Malaysia.

International Mathematical Competitions

While the IMO is our flagship, the MMAA facilitates Malaysia's entry into a variety of other prestigious international competitions to provide students with diverse academic exposure. These include the Asian Pacific Mathematical Olympiad (APMO), the International Mathematical Tournament of Towns (TOT), and the Balkan Mathematical Olympiad (BMO). Participation in these events allows our students to benchmark themselves against the best in the world, fostering a culture of lifelong learning and global academic citizenship.

Mathematical Champions' Summit (MCS)

The MCS is a specialized annual summit that celebrates the diversity of Malaysia's education system by bringing together top talents from various school streams. It integrates four unique competitions: MRSMMO (for MARA Junior Science Colleges), SBPMO (for Elite Boarding Schools), ISMO (for Islamic schools), and GISMO (for gifted and talented centers). The summit culminates in a residential event where students participate in team-based and individual challenges, fostering healthy competition and camaraderie among the nation's brightest minds.

Teacher Training: The LOMPAT Program

Recognizing that teachers are the frontline of talent discovery, the Latihan Olimpiad Matematik untuk Pendidik Anak Tempatan (LOMPAT) program provides specialized training for educators to identify and coach mathematically gifted students. Supported by the Global Talent Fund, this initiative provides teachers with the pedagogical tools and resources needed to move beyond the standard school syllabus. By empowering teachers, we ensure that the benefits of mathematical enrichment reach even the most remote schools in Malaysia, narrowing the opportunity gap.

IJSO Logo

Collaboration on International Science Olympiads

The MMAA acts as a vital collaborator in managing Malaysia's participation across a broad spectrum of International Science Olympiads. We provide the logistical framework and academic support for students competing in IESO (Earth Science), IEO (Economics), IGEO (Geography), IOL (Linguistics), IAO (Astronomy), IJSO (Junior Science), and IBO (Biology). By centralizing the management of these elite competitions, we ensure that Malaysia maintains a credible and high-performing presence in the global scientific community.

Kangaroo Math Competition (KMC) Malaysia

The Kangaroo Math Competition is the world's largest math competition, and the MMAA is proud to support its growth in Malaysia. This competition is designed to make mathematics fun and accessible, focusing on creative thinking rather than rote memorization. It serves as an essential "entry point" for students, sparking an interest in mathematics that often leads them to participate in more advanced programs like IMONST and the IMO.
